Note

William Sauntry was born in County Cork, Ireland, to William and Ellen Harrigan Sauntry. After the death of his father, his mother immigrated to New Bruswick with her six children. Sauntry became a lumberjack and learned the skills of harvesting trees maneuvering the large logs down the fast-flowing river. The family made their next move to Stillwater, MN and Sauntry joined the ranks of the many immigrant lumbermen that settled the area. He was strong and ambitous and within five years became a partner in a lumber company. He later became part owner of the St. Croix Boom Company. It was estimated to be worth 2 million dollars.

Once the lumber resource had been exhausted in the area, lumber interests moved west and Stillwater quickly lost a great deal of its population. Left behind were a treasure of spectacular Victorian mansions. Sauntry left his Stillwater mansion and attached recreation center, designed in the Moorish style which he worked on in the years before the bottom fell out of the areas lumber trade. He was having financial issues and perhaps health issues as well and eventually took his life in 1914 at the Ryan hotel in St Paul.

The Mansion and recreation house were divided and sold off, subdivided, and had fallen into disrepair. They have each been lovingly restored and the Sauntry House is now a bed and breakfast.

Sauntry was a first cousin once removed of Bing Crosby. They share common ancestors Dennis Harrigan 1781-1860 and wife Catherine Driscoll 1791-1864 of Ireland. Sauntry's mother, Ellen Harrigan and Crosby's grandfather Dennis Harrigan Jr. were siblings.

Williams wife Eunice Gertrude Lafeugy born Jun 1863 in Canada, died 06 Mar 1930 in Ramsay County ( source Minnesota death Index), married 11 Oct 1881 in Stillwater Minnesota. Her burial is said to be in Stillwater, MN. she is the mother to Beltram, Sauntry.
