Melvin H. Peters, 86, of 640 Williams Court, Medford, Wisconsin, formerly of Fond du Lac area, died Thursday, December 14, 2006, at Memorial Health Center, Medford. He was born on April 10, 1920, in Waupun, a son of Henry L. and Clara M. Nummerdor Peters. He graduated from 8th grade at West Brick School, near Brandon, and earned his G.E.D. in 1981 at the age of 60. Melvin was staff sergeant in the United States Army, 328th Ordnance, European Theater, during World War II from 1942-1946. He married Dorothy M. Guell on September 27, 1941. He was a dairy farmer in Byron and Lomira area for many years and later owned a resort near Rhinelander. Melvin was a charter member and founder of Calvary Bible Church, Fond du Lac, and was deeply committed to his family and to his Savior, Jesus Christ. He provided an example of strong character and leaves an exemplary legacy to his children and grandchildren.He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Medford; four children: Wayne R. (Marjorie) Peters of Eau Claire, Janet Peters Burbridge of Commerce City, MI, Hazel Fern (Grant) Peters Brown of Westboro, Patricia A. (James) Peters Swan of Ogema; 11 grandchildren: Carrie (Carter) Muench of Chanhassen, MN, David (Shelly) Peters of Mounds View, MN, Jonathan (Holly) Peters of Eau Claire, Joshua (Amber) Burbridge of Ypsilanti, MI, Zachary Burbridge of Detroit, MI, Bethany Burbridge of Ann Arbor, MI, Charity Burbridge of Livonia, MI, Heather Brown of Colorado Springs, CO, Laura Brown of Westboro, Annika Swan of Minneapolis, MN, Matthew (Tamra) Swan of Phillips; five great-grandchildren: Ellie Muench, Graham Muench, Zoey Peters, Silas Burbridge, Greta Peters; and a sister, Gertrude Stollfus of Green Lake. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers: an infant Kenny, Raymond (Jeanette), Lester (Lydia), Norm (Rose), Herb (June); two sisters: Carrie (Roy Doolan) and Bonnie (Joe Demoske). Burial will be in Alto Cemetery with military rites conducted at 3:00 p.m. by the American Legion Post 210.

Note

Melvin served as a staff sergeant in World War II. After the war, he owned and operated dairy farms in Byron and Lomira area for many years and, later, Merrydale Resort near Rhinelander. He helped to found Calvary Bible Church, Fond du Lac.
