Note
|
James was born February 12, 1833, in Wayne County, OH, son of James Wycoff and Rachel Cecil. He died January 3, 1916, at Barron, Barron County, Wisc., aged 82 years, 10 months and 21 days, and was buried there January 6, 1916, in Lot 11, BL.7 of Wayside Cemetery. His military style gravestone is inscribed "Jas. F. Wycoff Co. I 5 Ind. Cav." James was married four times. His first marriage was in about 1850 at Fayette County, OH, to Betty Thornton, who died in about 1859. No known children. The information about James' first two marriages was taken from affidavits filed by W. L. Carr in 1916 and 1917. Mr. Carr, then a resident of Hillsdale, Barron County, Wisc., stated that Betty Thornton was his father's stepsister and that Martha J. Carr was his sister. On September 10, 1887, James was united in marriage to Martha A. Carter, by Reverend N. L. Ford at Fulton County, ID. Martha was born August 12, 1844, in Wasbash County, ID, daughter of Asbery Ellison, born in KY, and Eliza Stubbs, born in NC. She died November 26, 1899, at Barron, Barron County, aged 55 years, 3 months and 14 days, and was buried there in the Barron Cemetery. There is no gravestone for her next to that of her husband and she may have been buried elsewhere in the cemetery. No known children. On May 11, 1901, James was united in marriage to Mrs. Clara H. Farver, by E. C. Dixon, Elder, at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Barron, in a ceremony witnessed by P. G. and Ella Hinman. Clara was born September 12, 1843, at Schenectady, NY, daughter of Henry Fuller and Jane Chambers, both born in England. She died February 26, 1926, at LaValle, Sauk County, Wis., aged 82 years, 5 months and 14 days. There is no gravestone for her next to that of her husband in Wayside Cemetery and her place of burial is unknown. Clara had two previous marriages. On May 30, 1858, Clara H. Fuller was united in marriage to William A. Perkins. They separated prior to the Civil War and were divorced April 15, 1868, in Richland County, Wisconsin. He later served in the Army during the Civil War. On February 19, 1874, Clara was united in marriage to Reuben Farver. He died October 6, 1892, at Cazenovia, Richland County, Wisc., and was buried at the same place. In the 1880 U.S. Census, James F. Wykoff was listed as a 47 year old farmer living in Union Township, Fulton County, ID, with his 37 year old wife Martha and their three children: Charles, age 13; Bertie, age 12; and 10 year old Eddie Wykoff. Also listed with the family was 38 year old John Richey, an Indiana born farm laborer. In the 1890 U.S. Census, Special Schedule, James F. Wycoff was listed as living in the City of Barron, Barron County, and as having served in Company I of the 10th ID Cavalry, from August 13, 1862, to September 15, 1865, for total service of 1 year, 1 month and 2 days. This is an obvious error as he actually served 3 years, 1 month and 2 days in Company I of the 5th ID Cavalry. In the 1900 U.S. Census, James Wykoff was listed as a 67 year old widowed house renovator, living in Barron, Barron County, with his two sons, Charles Wykoff, a 33 year old day laborer, and Bert Wykoff, a 31 year old saw mill laborer. James owned his house on 3rd Street, free and clear. In the 1910 U.S. Census, James F. Wykoff was listed as a 77 year old gardener living in Barron, Barron County, with his 65 year old wife Clara. They had been married eight years and owned their house with a mortgage. It was his fourth and her third marriage. In the 1920 U.S. Census, Clara M. Wycoff was listed as a 76 year old widow, living in the Village of La Valle in Sauk County, Wis., with the family of her 60 year old daughter Hattie E. Marshall and her 70 year old husband George E. Marshall, and their two children, Howard E. Marshall, a 31 year old baggage man at the railroad depot, and 28 year old Mary E. Marshall. George owned their house free and clear. James was a Civil War veteran who enlisted August 13, 1862, at Rochester, Fulton County, ID, to serve three years as a Private in the 90th ID Infantry. On September 6, 1862, he was mustered into Federal service with Company I at Indianapolis, ID. At that time he received $27.00 of his $100.00 enlistment bounty and was listed as a 29 year old, 5'10" tall farmer, with light hair, hazel eyes and a light complexion, born in Wayne County, Ohio. On an unknown date the 90th Indiana Infantry became the 5th ID Cavalry. On October 2, 1862, James was detached from Company I and detailed as a nurse at the City General Hospital, Indianapolis. He remained there the rest of 1862 and all of 1863. On the Company I muster rolls of Jan./Feb. and March/April, 1864, he was listed as absent as a patient at City General Hospital, Indianapolis. Sometime during May, 1864, he was released from City Hospital, and on May 19, 1864, reported to Barracks No. 1 at Louisville, KY. There it was noted that he was a 32 year old convalescent from City Hospital and that his transportation was free. On the Company I muster roll of August 31, 1864, it was noted that James was absent on detached service at Nashville, Tenn. On the muster roll of Sep./Oct., 1864, it was noted that he was absent with leave since Oct. 8, 1864, to attend elections. On the muster roll of Nov./Dec., 1864, it was noted that he was absent on scout since December 24, 1864. On the muster rolls of Jan./Feb. and March/April, 1865, it was noted that he was present with the company. On April 8, 1865, James was returning with a group of men who had been guarding telegraph operators at Tuka, Miss. His horse became frightened of something and bucked and plunged causing the hammer of his carbine at the rear of his saddle to strike the saddle hard enough to discharge, with the bullet going through his right foot, taking off the toe next to the little toe. At the same time he was thrown hard against the pommel of the saddle and severely injured one of his testicles. James was initially treated in the field, but on June 19, 1865, was admitted to the Hospital of the Soldiers Home at Indianapolis, for treatment of his gunshot wound. Two days later, on June 21, 1865, he was transferred to the City General Hospital, in the same city, for treatment of inflammation of the conjunctiva and was returned to duty on June 30, 1865. On September 15, 1865, James was mustered out of Federal service with Company I at Pulaski, Tenn. On the muster out roll it was noted that he was due $75.00 of his enlistment bounty. James returned to his home in Rochester, Fulton County, ID, after his discharge, where he resided for about seventeen years. In about 1882, he moved to Barron County, Wis., where he lived out the rest of his days. On May 28, 1877, James F. Wycoff filed Application No. 236,822, for an Invalid Veteran's Pension, which was approved under Certificate 214,058. On September 29, 1916, Clara Wycoff filed Application No. 107,626 for a Widow's Pension, which was approved under Certificate No. 831,542. She was receiving $30.00 per month at the time of her death |
