Note: Austin was a Civil War veteran who enlisted February 15, 1865, while living at Cataract, Monroe County, Wisconsin, Austin enlisted at Sparta, Monroe County, Wisconsin, to serve one year as a Private in the 49th Wisconsin Infantry. On February 27, 1865, he was mustered into Federal service with Company I, at Madison, Wisconsin. At that time he received 1/3 of his $100.00 enlistment bounty and was listed as a 36 year old, 5'9" tall farmer, with gray eyes, sandy hair and a ruddy complexion, born in Middleton, Connecticut. His enlistment was credited to the Town of Troy, Walworth County, Wisconsin.

Austin was a Civil War veteran who enlisted February 15, 1865, while living at Cataract, Monroe County, Wisconsin, Austin enlisted at Sparta, Monroe County, Wisconsin, to serve one year as a Private in the 49th Wisconsin Infantry. On February 27, 1865, he was mustered into Federal service with Company I, at Madison, Wisconsin. At that time he received 1/3 of his $100.00 enlistment bounty and was listed as a 36 year old, 5'9" tall farmer, with gray eyes, sandy hair and a ruddy complexion, born in Middleton, Connecticut. His enlistment was credited to the Town of Troy, Walworth County, Wisconsin.

On November 8, 1865, Austin was mustered out of Federal service with the Company I at Benton Barracks, Missouri. On the muster out roll it was noted that he was due the last 1/3 of his enlistment bounty and $12.93 cents in back pay.

Obituary

Mr. A. F. Skinner, one of Barron county's earliest settlers, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. R. Beckwith, on Friday, January 24, after a long illness.
Deceased was born in Connecticut May 4, 1928. Was married to Cordelia Alice Pardee in 1851. They moved to Wisconsin in 1853.

Mr. Skinner enlisted in 1864 in Company I, 49th Wisconsin Volunteers and was discharged in 1865. They moved to Barron county in 1869, being among the very first white settlers of the county. Mrs. Skinner died five years ago.

He leaves six children, 32 grand children and 2 great grand children. His children are Mrs. J. R. [Elva] Beckwith, of Barron, Mrs. William [Mary] Rafferty, of Kline, Colorado; Mrs. David [Alice] Hulbert, of Maple Grove; William Alfred Skinner, of Barron, and Ernest Skinner, of Dresser Junction.

The funeral was held from the home of J. R. Beckwith Sunday, Rev. G.H. R. Kershaw officiating. Interment was in the Barron cemetery. [Friday, January 31, 1908, Barron County Shield, Barron, Wis. ]

Austin was one of the first settlers in Barron County. In the 1870 U.S. Census, he was listed as a 46 year old farmer with $1,800 worth of real estate and $450 worth of personal property, living in Barron with his 42 year old wife Cordelia and their eight children, of whom the first was listed as born in Pennsylvania and the rest in Wisconsin:

nd nine month old Clement Skinner.

The family received their mail at the Prairie Farm Post Office. There was another Skinner listed as living in Barron, Eveline Skinner, an 18 year old schoolteacher, boarding with the family of 72 year old Andrew and 63 year old Lilian Miller. She may have been a daughter of Austin and Cordelia.

In the 1880 U.S. Census, Austin F. Skinner was listed as a 54 year old farmer, living in Maple Grove Township, Barron County, with his 51 year old wife Permelia and their five children:
Elbert, age 27;
Mabel, age 18;
Ernest, age 16;
Alice, age 13;
and 10 year old Clement Skinner.
Their son William Skinner was a 26 year old farmer boarding on the farm of John C. Beckwith.

In the 1890 U.S. Census, Special Schedule, Austin F. Skinner was listed as living ih the Town of Maple Grove, Barron County, Wisconsin, and as having served as a Private in Company I of the 29th Wisconsin Infantry, from February 15, 1865, to November 18, 1865, for total service of 9 months and 3 days.

In the 1900 U.S. Census, Austin Skinner was listed as a 49 year old grocer living on La Salle Avenue, in Barron with his 49 year old wife Cordelia. They had been married 49 years, owned their house free and clear, and were the parents of eight children of whom one was deceased.

On July 28, 1880, Austin filed and application for an Invalid Veteran's Pension, which was approved under Certificate 623,442.
