He was a mold maker in the JI Case steel foundry. After that, he owned a tavern.
Lived on a farm outside of Racine. Lightning struck chimneys of farmhouse around 1905 and it burn to the ground with all possessions lost. Left Racine sometime after 1905 for Kenosha, Wisconsin. Owned a tavern in Kenosha. Stayed in Kenosha till diagnosed with Rheumatism, moved to Luddington MIchigan for 1 year. Returned from Luddington to Kenosha, then moved to Green Bay for some period of time, owned another tavern, then returned to Kenosha. The two oldest boys were looking for work and went to Detroit. They worked in the Studebaker and Packard auto plants.Talked Mathias into moving to Detroit. Perhaps in late 1912, moved family to Detroit Michigan for 1 year, where two children died. Charlie who worked for the Studebaker plant died of a ruptured ulcer and Francis died of complication of a cold. He then returned to Kenosha WI and continued in the tavern business and also worked for Nash Motors foundry in Kenosha. Is said to have had cabins in Green bay, Kenosha and Racine.
